Create a solid to apply the effect to.

Select the solid layer to apply the effect to and draw a shape with the shape tools.

As you draw the shape, you will see a mask being created on the layer.

Click on the eye of the solid to hide it.

Now, apply the effect to the solid layer you want to apply the effect to.

In the solid layer with the effect applied, find the compositing option and click +.

Select Mask 1 from the Mask Reference 1 list.

The eye must be active to see the effect of the solid layer with the effect applied.
